ALDI have temporarily withdrawn plans to bring a store to Barry after proposals were rejected by the Vale council.

However, the company's regional property director for south Wales confirmed that Aldi is "in no way giving up on Barry" and would be submitting a revised plan at a future date.

The German discount supermarket had proposed plans for a store on Ty Verlon, Barry near McDonalds on the junction of Cardiff Road and Sully View. The plans were rejected by the Vale council's planning committee at the end of last month, citing the "negative impact" a new supermarket would have on businesses in the surrounding areas among other reasons for the refusal.

Aldi confirmed today (Monday, October 5) that it has withdrawn its planning application for what would have been its first supermarket in the Vale of Glamorgan.

The application for the Barry site in Barry was expected to create around 40 local jobs.

Aldi’s regional property director for south Wales, Rob Jones, said: “We are in no way giving up on Barry and our supporters who are keen to see an Aldi come to the town.”

He added that, whilst disappointed with the officer’s recommendation, Aldi will not be giving up on its plans.

Mr Jones said: “Whilst Aldi disagrees with the reasons put forward by the planning case officer at Vale of Glamorgan Council, we will work closely and proactively with the Local Authority to overcome these temporary difficulties over the coming months and will be submitting a revised planning application at the site in the near future."
