A BARRY secondary school witnessed new beginnings when pupils walked through its gates for the start of the new term.

Bryn Hafren comprehensive’s new school sign saw its’ mainly girl pupils stride proudly through the grounds and into class wearing their freshly-designed blazers.

The uniform replaces the attire which, many pupils had reported, had left them feeling inferior when they were surrounded by pupils they felt were smarter looking at schools elsewhere.

The sign, funded by the school itself, names the head teacher Tyrone Davies, in his second school year and is, he said, “a little less corporate” than the tradition Vale Council-funded authority signs.

Mr Davies said: “The school has been a lovely place this week and we have made a very good start to the new school year.

“Pupils are looking smarter than they ever have before. They seem to enjoy wearing their new uniform, seem to have more pride in their appearance and are noticeably walking taller.

“We are particularly pleased with our new Y7s who are a breath of fresh air with their enthusiasm and smiles."
