STAFF are preparing to open the doors of a £2.75m 21st century primary school in Gibbonsdown, Barry.

Pupils will enter the one-form entry Oak Field primary school, in Gibbonsdown, Barry, for the first time on Monday, September 7.

The school replaces the former premises which it shares with the Welsh medium Ysgol Gwaun y Nant on the same site.

That school has undergone a £160,000 revamp for its move into the previous Oak Field section.

Ysgol Gwaun y Nant will increase capacity to 420 – to satisfy demand - and Oak Field will retain its 210 pupil limit.

Constructors ISG are putting the final touches to the new build.

The community facility incorporates a lift, photo voltaic panels on the roof, touch screen and Apple TVs, and new play facilities.

It will include a wildlife area and it has parking provision.

School supporters previously waged a successful campaign to halt Vale Council proposals to close Oak Field and direct Gibbonsdown schoolchildren to Palmerston and Jenner Park primaries.

Oak Field head teacher, Ian Williams said he expected he would hold an official school opening later in the term once pupils and staff were settled.
