COUNCILLORS in Barry recently supported a campaign to raise awareness of domestic abuse, which was highlighted at the tenant's family fun day in Gladstone Park.

Plaid Cymru councillors Ian Johnson and Nic Hodges supported the "A Mile in Her Shoes" campaign held at the event.

A Mile in Her Shoes is a volunteer-led charity that helps women find their feet through running. They encourage women who may have been affected by various issues to experience running as a way of exercising, socialising, boosting confidence and raising self-esteem.

The "Walk a Mile" event was a playful opportunity for men to raise awareness in their community about helping end violence against women and girls, one step at a time.

Councillor Hodges said: “They were looking for recruits and we were challenged to put on a pair of high heels or jazzed up flip flops or pink slippers and join the White Ribbon Campaign to ‘Walk A Mile in Her Shoes’. We were pleased to support the campaign."

Councillor Ian Johnson said that the Plaid Cymru councillors were happy to actively support the campaign organised by Atal y Fro.

He said: “We congratulate Atal Y Fro for their work providing support for women and children within who have experienced, or are experiencing domestic violence."

AM Jane Hutt also joined supporters of the 'Walk a Mile in Women's Shoes' event at Gladstone Park raising awareness of domestic violence and the excellent work of Atal y Fro.

Jane said: “I was very pleased to support the men donning high heeled shoes in order to raise awareness of domestic violence. I was also glad to congratulate Kay Quinn from Atal Y Fro on the charity’s Investors in People Gold Award. This is a unique charity in the Vale supporting victims of domestic violence and working towards its elimination.”
