IF ONE event encapsulates what is so wonderful about Barry and the Vale – then it is the Vale Show.

I had the privilege of spending the day at the grounds of Fonmon Castle last week, and it was fantastic to see so many friendly faces in such glorious weather. It was very hot.

The show takes a huge amount of organisation, and this year it felt busier than ever before. I must pay tribute to the new team on board that ensured that everyone had a great day.

Show director Dai Harris and his colleagues in the committees and sub committees continue to provide sterling service and put on a great day. The show has cemented its place as one of the most important agricultural events in Wales.

I have had the opportunity to visit many shows around Wales over the years, and the Vale Show is in the premier division.

It is hard to think of an event that has more to offer for everyone; livestock, dog show, horticulture, bee keeping, cobs, poultry show and plenty of great competitions with entrants from around the region. This year saw the introduction of a sheep shearing competition in a tent packed with eager spectators.

I was particularly impressed with how the farmers maintained such attention to detail when shearing at such incredible speeds.

Amidst its development and diversity, it still maintains its focus on agricultural matters; helping celebrate, educate and promoting the best of the Vale produce, crops and livestock.

It is worth remembering, however, that this event doesn't simply just happen. There is a considerable amount of organisation, planning and effort that goes into the show. The way it comes together is the perfect model of how the community can make a difference.

I saw many families from Barry at the show, and for young children during the summer holidays it is fantastic. Where else can you be at a fantastic agricultural show with something for everyone, and with just a short drive you can enjoy one some of finest beaches in the country. Barry and the Vale has it all.
