A GROUP of walkers with learning and physical disabilities have recently completed a marathon challenge to raise funds for a Sully skills centre.

The event was organised by Fit '4' Wales, a project which has been running now for ten years in Cardiff but only four years in the Vale.

It is a healthy living project for adults with a learning/physical disability to promote a healthy lifestyle.

Joanne Pedrick, a physiotherapy technical instructor based at Hen Goleg with the Vale Community Support Team, works very hard with the Skills Centre at Sully to promote the service users' fitness and lifestyle.

From July 22 through to July 30 the walking group, led by Joanne and supported by Scope staff members Caroline Morgan-Phillips and Lynne Sanderson led a walking group which consisted of people with learning and physical disabilities on their challenge of walking a marathon over six days.

The marathon was completed on July 30 and the group walked well over the distance of 26.2 miles walking a staggering 29miles!

A different venue was walked each day and all the service users worked extremely hard.

The last day finished at Barry Island and all the service users, family, friends and staff were there to cheer everyone over the finish line.

Joanne said: "It was a truly amazing event and all concerned worked so hard and the challenge was completed with no injury or incidents.

"Well done to all who took part, they are all very proud of themselves.

"A big thank you to O'Shea's Fish and Chip shop for supplying the group with a much deserved sausage and chips at the finish line.

"The group would like to thank the owners, Craig and Natalie O'Shea, for their continued support, it is very much appreciated.

"The Marathon Challenge raised a total of £820 which will be used to improve the skills centre at Sully."
