PRIME Minister David Cameron has said that he wants Aston Martin to bring a manufacturing plant to St Athan.

Speaking during a visit to the Royal Welsh show this week and after announcing a deal which will create 250 jobs servicing Ministry of Defence (MOD) vehicles vehicles in Merthyr Tydfil, Mr Cameron said that a large MOD hanger in St Athan could be made available to Aston Martin.

He made an appeal to the luxury car manufacturer to choose St Athan as the site for their new SUV plant.

Aston Martin are currently considering several sites across the UK, including St Athan. An SUV plant in St Athan could create hundreds of new jobs for the Vale.

Mr Cameron said: "As we set out this week, we also want to do more to release public sector land to create new opportunities for hard-working people.

"Here in Wales, I think there is real potential to vacate Ministry of Defence land at St Athan and we're willing to make that available as part of efforts to persuade Aston Martin Lagonda to manufacture their new prestige SUV in the UK."

The Welsh Government have been pushing St Athan as a site for commercial development for several years and have said that they welcomed the call to free up MOD land for business opportunities.

A spokesman for Aston Martin said that no decision has been made regarding the proposed location of their new manufacturing plant.

They said: "No decision has been taken on a location of a new manufacturing plant. We are considering a wide variety of domestic and international options."
