HOSPITAL staff were encouraged to "Work Out at Work" last week to improve their health and wellbeing in the workplace.

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board hosted a number of events at the Barry Hospital, University Hospital Llandough (UHL) and University Hospital of Wales sites to mark the campaign on Friday, June 12.

The day came at the right time as staff got to be amongst the first to try out the new outdoor fitness suite recently installed at UHL.

The six equipment machines have been provided to increase health and wellbeing as well as free access to fitness for staff, patients and visitors. The outdoor equipment at the hospital has been designed specifically for public open spaces and is suitable for adults of all ages.

Staff were also encouraged to get on their bikes and contribute to cycling 100km, make a smoothie in the canteen, join in with group fitness classes and seek advice on musculoskeletal problems from the physiotherapy team.

Simone Joslyn, Clinical project lead at Cardiff and Vale UHB said: “Health and wellbeing is important in the workplace and "Work Out at Work day" not only acts to encourage people to take part in the day’s activities but to showcase what activities they have on their doorstep to improve their health and fitness.

"We hope that rather than it be a one off, staff will feel inspired to make positive and active changes to their lifestyles to improve their overall wellbeing.”

The new equipment was funded through Cardiff and Vale Health Charity. The national "Work out at Work" campaign encourages employers to get their staff involved in a variety of activities to keep them moving and active.
