JUST like local friends and rivals Penarth Rectory Road, the men of Penarth Windsor Bowls Club have also qualified for the final rounds of the Welsh Carruther’s Shield competition.

In what many believe to be of of the very best and closest games of bowls witnessed at the picturesque Robinswood greens, the PG1 team, captained by Brian Rogers, defeated the highly ranked team from Caerau Welfare.

From the first to last wood, the game see-sawed, with the Windsor first to take a lead before a sustained and very vocal counter-attack threatened to overcome the Windsor players.

In previous seasons, such voracity would have caused mayhem, but this new Windsor side is made of sterner stuff and with the final ends determining the result, Windsor held their nerve and achieved victory by 77 shots to 69.

B Rogers, A Dudley, E Thorne, M Woodcock: 17-16. M Matthews, P Gooding, R Hudson, K McLeod: 20-20. A Morgan, C Burton, P Gunter, T Holmes: 21-19. R Flitney, A Woodcock, S Close, M Hope: 19-15. Windsor play Skewen in the first round proper.

The ladies of Windsor continued their winning ways against teams from Rumney Gardens, Cadoxton and Barry.

The victorious skips being D Thomas, M Owen, V Flitney, L Thomas, D Roper, K Dyer and their all important leads, seconds and thirds.

The Alliance game had to be stopped when inclement weather won the day.

Against Cardiff Athletic, the team, under David Howell, were under the cosh with the rinks of octogenarian skips D Hales, AJ John Hardess and the captain himself struggling in the adverse conditions.

It was left to the team’s youngsters M Fullbrook and K Trenchard to save the day.

The Wednesday Munro Cup side continued its unbeaten run at the windy Barry Athletic Island green.

All four Windsor rinks were successful in a 74 shots to 46 victory.

Congratulations to 33-year-old Matthew Woodcock on selection for the county side.
