AT the May meeting of Soroptimist International Barry & District, the Community Service Award was presented to Saffron Manning from Bryn Hafren Comprehensive.

Since 1996, when the club decided to mark the Centenary of Female Secondary Education in Barry, a cup has been awarded annually to recognise a student who has made an outstanding commitment to the community.

Immediate past president Jeni Gower Jones outlined why Saffron, who is studying Applied Science, Health and Social Care and Biology, had proved to be such a worthy recipient of the award.

She was nominated by Emma Price, head of Bryn Hafren Sixth Form, who described Saffron as “an extremely valued and proactive member of our school community”. The nomination was supported by Holly Morgan (Communities First Development Youth officer) who described Saffron as “committed, enthusiastic, with a fantastic work ethic”. Saffron has received Millennium Certificates for 150 hours volunteering since becoming a highly respected member of the Barry Communities First team in a volunteer capacity in 2014.

Her voluntary work has included participating in a four week Summer Camp Project (which involved sport and art), Catch Up Clubs (after school homework support), The Nights Out Project with the Arts Council of Wales and, more recently, Saffron has been part of a group of volunteers who were successful in their application for a £850 grant for a Youth Led Grants Panel known as Dish out Dosh in the Vale of Glamorgan.

Saffron has had previous involvement with the SI Barry and District Club having been presented with her Millennium Award by Jane Hutt AM, who is also a Soroptimist, as well as taking part in the annual “mock interviews” the club organises.

Saffron was accompanied by her proud father, Jeremy Manning, and the Soroptimist cup along with a cheque was presented to Saffron by president Clare Hart, who also congratulated her on successfully obtaining a place at University.
