A TEAM of Barry College students will trek to the top of Wales’ highest mountain in a bid to raise funds for charity.

Health and Social Care Level 3 students, Paige Hunter, Ashleigh Fisher, Charlotte Mould, and Natasha Small will undertake the Mount Snowdon Challenge, in aid of Marie Curie, this June 14.

The Barry campus-based students will hike the long winding Llanberis route to the North Wales summit to help the charity’s nurses continue to provide care to terminally ill patients.

Each of the four has to raise a minimum of £125 to climb the mountain, but the girls are endeavouring to raise as much money as possible from the challenge.

Race For Life veteran Paige, 19, of Barry, said: “We had to do some charity work as part of our Welsh Baccalaureate. We decided we wanted to do something challenging and out of the box. We chose to raise money for Marie Curie as the charity supported and cared for a member of our groups’ loved one.

“We learnt what Marie Curie did to help those suffering with terminal illnesses and the way that they helped support families of them and this helped us decide that Marie Curie is the charity we wanted to raise funds for.

“We’ve all being training together as a group. We go on walks as much as we can and are walking up Pen y Fan in a few weeks as a bit of practice. We’ve been going to gym to build up our fitness and strength as we know how hard and challenging it’s going to be.”

She added: “I’m petrified of heights. I’m hoping to get over my fear of heights and getting to the top to take a photo!”

Charlotte, 19, of Wenvoe, who has also taken part in the Race For Life, said: “I’m looking forward to getting to the top and saying that I’ve achieved something for Marie Curie.”

Ashleigh Fisher, 18, of Barry, said: “I’m looking forward to the breakfast in the morning and least looking forward to the fact that there are no toilets on the way up.”

And 17-year-old Natasha, of Barry, said: “I’m looking forward to getting to the top knowing that I’ve raised money to help and support families and least looking forward to walking back down.”

All four students are currently doing their college placements in which they do volunteer work for different charities and services.

They hope to do some small fundraising events to raise more money and are considering doing a car wash at the college on one of their days off in addition to raffles.
