TWELVE men from the Barry area were recently given a lift into construction following a free course organised by Newydd Housing Association.

All 12 unemployed participants passed the accredited Construction Skills Certification Scheme course providing them with a CSCS card, essential for employment in the industry.

The week long course was funded by Pendragon Design and Build as part of their commitment to support local employment during the redevelopment of the former Marine Hotel on Barry Island donating more than £4000 in support.

The course included health and safety practice, timber and ground work and working within a team, putting them in good stead on a building site.

Kevin Howell, community partnership manager at Newydd said: “We felt that providing this course was a simple way of giving unemployed local people every chance of getting employment in the construction industry.

"Getting a CSCS card is paramount in the construction industry and the participants now have a huge opportunity to progress their careers.”

As well as their time in the classroom, participants gained practical experience outdoors, including building a pergola at the community garden and allotment in Gibbonsdown.

Ryan Ledsam, 21 said: “I have really enjoyed myself and working in a team has really built my confidence. I want to work in construction and have a labouring job lined up. This course has made sure that I can get the CSCS card I need to get on a building site.”

David Johansen from Pendragon Design and Build said: “I was delighted to support this initiative as part of our commitment to supporting and investing in local communities. I hope that the skills and qualifications gained by the participants will now enable them to find long term employment opportunities in the construction industry.”
