Following the previous week's traffic chaos on Barry Island, last weekend the Vale council went back to the drawing board and came up with a new plan that's seems to have "done the trick".

On another busy weekend for the Island, visitors this week found traffic flowing freely and navigating their way out of the Island's car parks with ease - a far cry from the gridlocked nightmare seen just seven days earlier.

As well as a new road layout and signs encouraging the use of the Barry Docks park and ride facility, Council officers were placed at strategic points on the roads and in car parks to keep the flow of traffic moving.

The new road layout, in place at the Ship Hill junction, gave priority to traffic leaving Barry Island where the existing roundabout was replaced by a cross roads.

Traffic management officers were on duty at Barry Island from 2pm to 7pm all weekend stationed at points of heavy congestion, including at the Cosy Corner roundabout near to the Harbour Road car park.

The officers were also able to control use of the zebra crossing on Harbour Road at peak times to balance priority between those leaving the resort by car and on foot.

The council also put up temporary signs encouraging visitors to use the existing park and ride facility at Barry Docks rail station.

Miles Punter, Director of Visible Service at the Vale of Glamorgan council said: “The new measures seem to be doing the trick.

"As we said, they will initially be in place on a trial basis but if they prove effective and we receive positive feedback from residents and visitors they will be implemented on a permanent basis later in the summer.

“We want as many people as possible to visit Barry Island, but we also want to make sure it’s easy and safe for them to do so.

“We will be monitoring the trial arrangements closely, particularly with the good weather predicted for the coming weeks, but we’re hoping that what we’ve put in place has gone some way to solving the congestion problem.”
