THE future of Flat Holm Island is in safe hands, with public access guaranteed for the next 30 years.

The Island, which is four miles off the coast of Barry and maintained by the Barry-based Flat Holm Society, is being leased by the RSPB in collaboration with the National Trust and the Flat Holm Society.

Two years ago Cardiff City Council, who are responsible for the Island, planned to sell it off in order to save £150,000 a year. At a recent meeting of their Cabinet it was revealed that Flat Holm looks to once again have a secure future thanks to the partnership set up to run the Island.

Flat Holm Island has been described as a "living museum" due to its rich history, being a former home to Anglo-Saxon developments, a cholera isolation hospital, and also being the base for the very first wireless transmission over open sea by Italian inventor Guglielmo Marconi in 1897.
