PUPILS at a Barry Secondary school were given an insight into the world of politics thanks to a visit from a Lord this week.

Girls from Bryn Hafren Comprehensive met Lord Alastair Aberdare who gave them a brief presentation on the history of the House of Lords and its operation as well as his role within it during his first visit to the town.

The former businessman, the fifth baron, was elected to the House of Lords in 2009 and holds a special interest in issues such as pancreatic cancer, same sex marriage, education and skills, and first aid provision. The pupils grilled Lord Aberdare on a range of issues, including his voting record.

Lord Aberdare said: “They were very good questions. They had researched them carefully – too carefully on my voting record. They are very aware of their own place on rights to vote and the importance of having the systems in place in school.”

Year 13 pupil, Verity Campbell, said she thought Lord Aberdare was very informative.

The 18-year-old said: “He was very open, very honest. He helped us realise politicians are there to help us.”

Fellow Year 13 pupil Rebekah Walford also said he had been very informative.

The 17-year-old said: “It’s good to have new perspectives.”

Teacher and Welsh Baccalaureate coordinator, Natasha Jennings said Lord Aberdare had been very approachable and had given a very good presentation.

She said: “He engaged very well with the students. He’s clearly done this before. He’s probably left here with food for thought based on our questions. I think he was quite stunned we had done our homework.”
