News of November 26, 1964:

l A quiz between Cardiff and Barry committees of the Coal Utilisation Council resulted in a 41 points to 30 win for Cardiff, who will now go forward in the second round to play the Neath and Port Talbot team.

l Forty-two years ago the late Earl of Plymouth performed the opening of a new hall at the Barry Island Conservative Club, which was named after him. On Wednesday week his widow, the Countess of Plymouth, performed the ceremony marking the re-opening of the hall after reconstruction and renovations which had cost £6,000.

l The South East Glamorgan Divisional Executive are to forward a recommendation for a grant of £3,000 for the Barry Yacht Club to the Further Education Committee.

l Butts Rangers retained their unbeaten record in Division IV by defeating Highfield Rangers 4-2 on Saturday, The Rangers immediately began the attack but were held into a movement by Parry that resulted in a goal.

l A major increase in polystyrene capacity is announced today by Distrene Limited, a company in the Distillers Chemicals and Plastics Group. Extensions to the manufacturing facilities now completed have increased the total capacity to 22,000 tons a year.

Distrene Limited, a company jointly owned 50/50 by Distillers and Dow Chemical, USA, manufacturers Styron polystyrene by the process developed by Dow, and the products of this company are marketed by British Resin Products Limited.

l The shock result of the week must be the 3-2 defeat of Barry Dockers, last year’s winners, in the first round of the ASRS Cup.

l In anticipation of the rites of the Roman Catholic Church being read in English and the subsequent reading of mass by the priest facing the worshippers, St Helen’s RC Church is currently undergoing renovations which are necessitated by these new proposals. It is intended that the rites will be read in English commencing on Sunday.

This being so the altar has had to be re-arranged in accordance with the new Vatican decrees.

It is understood that the cost of the work will be £10,000.
