A BARRY primary school’s parents group was put through its paces when their children took a break from class to boost their fitness levels.

Ten mums from the Families First group, based at Ysgol Gwaun y Nant, in Gibbonsdown, took part in a circuit training session with their youngsters by their side.

The Barry Communities First-organised event saw its community well-being coach, Hazel James and Parkwood Leisure fitness instructor, Fran Shore-nye led the way.

Mum-of-three, Victoria Avaient, 35, said: “We’ve done Welsh lessons, maths, reading readiness, and a relaxation session. If you’ve been struggling a bit it’s nice to chat.”

Mum-of-three, Nicola Nash, 36, added: “It’s nice to have a coffee and a chat. It makes my week – it’s something to look forward to. I can socialise.

She added that free bicycle sessions, held at nearby Iolo Park, had also been invaluable in helping the family keep safe, fit, and healthy.

Families First facilitator at the school, Natalie Page said: “ I'd like to say a huge thank you to Fran and Hazel for organising the session and also to the parents and the children that took part in the session. It was fantastic to see everybody enjoying themselves whilst keeping fit.”

The group meets every Thursday at the school, from 8.30am to 11am where it takes part in a range of different activities.

Upcoming activities include iPad training, Welsh lessons and building confident families.
