A BARRY primary school has placed itself ahead of the rest in a mission to gain top technology-style title connections.

Youngsters from All Saints C/W decided former Wales international rugby union captain, Ieuan Evans and First Minister, Carwyn Jones should be honorary members of their eCadet crew.

The pupil team is part of the nationwide eCadet scheme, which trains and supports children, from three to 18 years) to help them keep their friends, parents and community safe online.

The well-known pair were presented with their special gold badges by All Saints deputy head teacher and eCadet coordinator, Aled Williams, at the Senedd.

Aled said: “We were delighted when both Carwyn and Ieuan agreed to be our honorary eCadets. They are two inspirational figures for Wales and on social media, so it’s wonderful to have their moral support.

“The eCadet scheme has had a massive impact at school in helping empower the children to keep each other safe. It’s great to see the enthusiasm the children have for engaging with the three year programme.”

There are more than 550 eCadets in schools across Wales and England.

It was founded by Wales-based former policeman Henry Platten.

Henry said: “It’s fantastic to see the positive impact the eCadet scheme is having at All Saints and in other schools across Wales and England. It’s great to know that together the network of eCadet schools are helping to make the internet a safer place for communities across Wales.”

First Minister Carwyn Jones, added: “The internet is an ever-present part of modern life. It’s a great tool for education, research and fun, but it’s really important that when our young people surf the web they do it securely. eCadets is clearly doing some excellent work in this area and I congratulate them on their Nominet award. We have some fantastic e-Safety partnerships in Wales and I’m keen to see them all working together to ensure our young people can get the most out the web, but in a safe way.”
