PLAID Cymru have warned that the multi-million pound cuts to the Vale council’s budget will impact frontline services

The Local Government Settlement was recently announced by the Welsh Government with the Vale of Glamorgan facing a 3.4 per cent cut in its budget, or £5.5m.

Plaid Cymru councillor Ian Johnson said that cuts from Westminster were being passed on to local government and that the Labour-run Welsh Government were ignoring the effects on local services.

He warned that there would be an impact on everyday visible services, adding that it will make for a very difficult year for the council.

“Plaid Cymru is deeply concerned at the cuts that the Welsh Government want the Vale Council to make,” he said.

“Welsh Government funding is three-quarters of the council’s total budget and they are planning on making a £5.5m cut. This is about £8m when inflation is taken into account.

“That will make a very difficult year for the council.

“Plaid Cymru is worried that we will see cutbacks in the most obvious visible services – rubbish collection, street-lighting, grass-cutting and we have already seen proposals for cuts in libraries.

“These cuts are being made because Westminster does not properly fund Wales according to need, and the decision to put the City of London ahead of public services in Wales.”
