AIR Cadet Joe Bailey from 372 (Barry) Squadron swapped the air for the sea when he boarded the 72 foot “Round the World” Challenge Wales racing Yacht for a week on the ocean waves.

Challenge Wales is a charity dedicated to providing young people aged between 12 and 25 years old, and the young at heart, of Wales a chance to develop their self-esteem and life-skills of team working and communication through the experience of offshore sailing.

Joe sailed from Pembroke to Conway via Ireland led by Skipper Andy Hall.  Joe, along with other Air Cadets from South Wales, were completely involved with the sailing by winching the sheets and halyards, taking the helm and raising the sails. The cadets experienced a disciplined routine where they relied on each other for the smooth running of the venture.

Joe said: “It was an exhausting but amazing experience which everyone enjoyed. I totally enjoyed this trip as everyone worked well together as a team. I also took the helm throughout the trip. At times we reached speeds of 10 - 15 knots which was really exciting”.

Flight Lieutenant Jason Horton, Commanding Officer said: “Sailing with Challenge Wales is just one of the amazing opportunities which Air Cadets can experience. Joe would have worked hard within a team in a demanding environment; however, he had fun and learnt new skills during his week away”.

The Air Cadets are now preparing themselves for a busy and challenging couple of months including, flying, gliding, shooting, sport, Duke of Edinburgh expeditions and adventurous training exercises.
