THE people who successfully acquired one of Barry’s most-loved historic buildings are inviting the community to have their say on its future.

Public opinion, and ideas, are sought for the use of the 19th century grade II-listed Watchtower, at Cold Knap, following its auction at the Park Inn Hotel, Cardiff, in March when the gavel was brought down at £60,000.

The architect-owned building has now been winter-proofed to safe-guard its long-term future and now the property, originally bought as a portfolio piece, is open to suggestions for a fully functional use.

The owners will consider the ideas and debates surrounding them and put into practice those that could be employed in-keeping with the structure's heritage and place in the community.

The stone structure, built around 1860 as a coastguard station, has previously seen one use as a tea room and use by Scouts.

Following the auction, the Welsh-born, RIBA chartered architect, who grew up in Barry, said: “You could sense how much this building means to the local community.

“I know that this will be a project that will be sympathetic to the buildings heritage and its place in the community.

“I'd love to hear from anyone who has an idea or a view on what they would like the Watchtower to become.

“It's clear the people have fallen in love with this building as I have. They should have the opportunity to present their opinions on its future.”

His partner in the scheme, this week, added: “Ideally we would like to ask the local community for their thoughts and ideas on what a restored Watchtower would offer to the local area. Ideas on what its use would be and what value and benefit it could provide and what need it would be meeting.

“We are keen to muster local interest.”

The owners plan to give a public presentation before the end of the year to also seek ideas for the project.

What do you think should be an ideal use for the Watchtower?
