A BARRY Island businessman has proved that Derek is a popular name for Daleks after he revealed one had invaded his premises.

Barry Island Quasar owner, Mark Vockins has thrown open his doors to Doctor Who’s most terrifying foe, but to ensure Derek doesn’t stand alone he has surrounded him with a life-size replica of Star Wars’ R2-D2.

Derek’s Quasar home also hosts a Tardis with 39-year-old Mark armed with a trusty sonic screwdriver.

Mark also has Doctor Who’s trusty K-9 and a life-sized Cyberman back at his Broad Street home.

‘Derek’ the Dalek is based at LDS Motor Factors, Cardiff Road.

Doctor Who, played by Peter Capaldi and sidekick Clara Oswald played by Jenna Coleman, this year filmed the popular sci-fi television show at Barry Island train station – metres from the Quasar base – without knowing they would find some familiar features there.

Mark said he had bought the Dalek on eBay from a seller who had sub-listed it with R2-D2.

Mark said: “It’s a proper one. You can sit in it. It’s got a mobility scooter inside and a joystick control. You can drive it around, but it needs two people to take the lid off. I’ve never been in it because it’s behind the desk.

“I’ve been calling it Derek because that’s what the guy called it when I bought it.

“I bought the Tardis on eBay.

“I started off with The Terminator to draw people in, but I used to watch Doctor Who and a kid and hide behind the sofa. Tom Baker was my favourite as I was born in 1974 and grew up with him. I also thought my dad looked like Tom Baker.”

Mark also bought Doctor Who episodes on DVD and discovered November 1987 episodes, Delta and The Bannermen, starring Sylvester McCoy as the Time Lord, had been filmed at Barry Island – with the time machine landing outside the holiday camp.

Mark added: “The kids think the Dalek is cool and where the Tardis is, there used to be a cupboard. I do enjoy watching Doctor Who.”
