A LOLLIPOP lady awarded for bravery after suffering serious injury saving schoolchildren from an oncoming car, has been given a blue badge after initial refusal.

51-year-old Karin Williams, awarded the St David award for bravery and a Pride of Britain award for her actions when she saved the lives of youngsters she was helping to cross the road outside Rhws primary school, in 2013, won her battle for a blue disabled badge after Vale MP Alun Cairns, intervened in the Vale Council dispute.

HRH Prince Charles recently introduced Karin to President Obama, but Vale MP said her disability meant the awarding of the blue badge was a “common sense decision.”

Brave Karin has relied on the support of her husband during her lengthy recovery, and the new badge means she can access facilities across the Vale.

Karin said: “The blue badge will make such a difference to my day to day life. I had originally been refused a badge despite having a number of long term conditions. I can now access services that will allow me to rebuild my life in Rhoose and return to normality. I have had a number of issues accessing support, but I am grateful for the intervention from my MP.”

Mr Cairns said: “I am delighted that common sense has prevailed for Karin in her quest for support as she gets her life back on track. The Vale Council has been supportive of Karin, but she has very particular needs and I am really pleased that they have reviewed the decision.”
