A COMMUNITY action day at Barry’s Porthkerry Country Park has been hailed a huge success.

Willing voluntary helpers from all walks of life assisted rangers from Porthkerry and Cosmeston in clearing blocked streams at the end of last month as part of the parks’ Community in Action scheme.

Heavy rainfall and large numbers of woodland tree falls have led to an increase in the amount of material flowing and blocking the course of the streams.

Local volunteer Steve, who has been helping at the park for years, said: “I love being able to help out and make a difference to the habitats here at the park. Together we can really make a difference. I volunteer because I love it, not because I have to do it.”

The Local Cardiff Rivers Group, Natural Resources Wales team and local volunteers from the community, young and old, put on their wellies and got stuck in, and were rewarded with a free barbecue for all their efforts.

To take part in the next Community in Action event, call the rangers on 01446 733589 to be added to their mailing list.
