CHILDREN at a Barry primary school ensured the summer festival scene got an extension when they invited a group of musicians to play.

Gladstone pupils had an exciting start to the new school year when they were treated to a stunning musical performance to celebrate the Cowbridge Music Festival.

A group of musicians from Germany, Switzerland and Bulgaria, entitled Tri i Dve, played a succession of Bulgarian traditional tunes in front of the junior children, using a range of instruments.

Smiles were the order of the day as youngsters clapped along to accompany the musical ensemble.

The performance was organised by Mary Elliott, director of Cowbridge Music Festival and Tessa Shellens, a trustee.

It was part of the community outreach programme.

The band has played in six schools across the Vale, all funded by the Arts Council of Wales.

Deputy head teacher, Helen Reilly, said: “Five lucky children who receive violin lessons at Gladstone were invited to attend a workshop prior to the performance and then accompany the musicians during their final tune.

“What an amazing performance. The children thoroughly enjoyed their musical treat.

“They joined in with great enthusiasm and were enthralled to watch five of their Gladstone friends playing in front of them as part of the band.

“Thank you very much to Mary and Tessa from the Cowbridge Music Festival and of course to the talented Tri i Dve for inviting us to take part in this exciting performance.”
