A BARRY-BASED sheltered scheme co-ordinator is to do battle with the elements to celebrate her employer’s milestone birthday and raise funds for charity.

Sara Reid-Danks, a sheltered housing scheme coordinator at Elis Fisher Court will be raising funds for Alzheimer's Research at Cardiff University by doing a stand up paddle during the week of Newydd housing association’s 40th birthday.

Sara will navigate a 40km course around Cardiff Bay in a gruelling effort expected to take her around eight hours to complete on Sunday, September 14.

Sara said: "I was inspired to take on the challenge to support Jon Hussey, another member of staff who is raising vital funds through a 'Series of unfortunate events' during 2014, a total of 18 physical and testing fitness challenges.

"Jon lost his grandmother to the disease in a painful and upsetting manner and hopes to raise as much money as he can to one day halt, reverse or even prevent this disease. I wanted to support Jon and take on a challenge myself during Newydd's 40th birthday week not only to raise money for this worthwhile cause but to also celebrate Newydd reaching this milestone."

Sara will be launching her paddle from the Cardiff International White Water Centre at 9am.
