A NEW partnership project is being launched by Barry Town Council and the Vale of Glamorgan Youth Service called Barry Youth Action (BYA). The group will consist of young people aged between 11 and 18 who have been elected by their peers in youth organisations and schools from Barry to represent youngsters in Barry.

BYA will work with Barry Town Council to ensure views and ideas of young people are listened too and taken into account when decisions are made which will affect youngsters.

The group will meet once a month during term time to discuss issue affecting young people. BYA members will regularly share news, views, issues and ideas of young people with Barry Town Councillors, and will be involved in projects and activities to make Barry a better place for young people and they will play an active part in community events organised by Barry Town Council.

Recruitment will begin in September with youth workers visiting schools and young organisations to explain what will be involved. There is an information event for young people, youth workers and teachers on Wednesday, September 24 at 6.30pm at Barry Town Council, 7 Gladstone Road, Barry, CF62 8NA.

Being a part of BYA will mean accruing volunteering hours that count towards their Welsh Baccalaureate, Duke of Edinburgh Award and Millennium Volunteers certificate. It can also enhance a young person’s application for college, university or job.
