A BARRY events team has signalled warning shots to Glastonbury supremo Michael Eavis – Barry’s equivalent GlastonBARRY, the pretender to the throne, is aiming to rule.

Music fans from across the UK descended on Romilly Park – minus wellies – to bag their spot for the sell-out festival in Wales’ largest town.

The event, held in the giant Mack Events Marquee last month, sold out in nine days – leaving more than 500 people on a waiting list hoping for tickets.

Cousins Ross Mackintosh and Matt Blumberg spent nine months planning the event which grows bigger each year.

The Battle of the Band winners Nia and Sarah opened the show and local acts The Strip Lights, Back to November, 12 Bore and The Relics rocked the Mack Events Marquee throughout the day.

Europe's number one tribute to Bob Marley-Legend performed for more than an hour on stage.

Organiser Ross Mackintosh said: “They were absolutely incredible. Headline act Ultimate Madness rounded of the night with one of the best sets we have ever seen. The whole marquee was bouncing.

“We were overwhelmed with the reaction we have had.

“People have travelled from as far as London, Leicester, Bristol and Birmingham to this event. We want to bring the top events to our town so Barry locals have top class gigs on their doorstep.

“It's great to bring people into the town from different parts of the UK to appreciate Barry and help boost tourism.”

One fan Sian Maguire, commenting following the gigs, said: “We travelled down from Leicester for the second year running and we weren't disappointed, in fact GlastonBARRY was even better.

Great bands, fantastic atmosphere, wonderful people. Well done, can't wait for next year.”

Ade Wheeler wrote: “I heard about GlastonBarry through a friend so decided to travel to Barry with my wife and friends from Bristol for a day out listening to top quality tribute bands, but for a fraction of the cost of most festivals.

“So glad we did cos it was brilliant. The whole day was well organised, professional and something we will come back to enjoy next year. GlastonBARRY rocked and we loved it".

Luke Pritchard, who recently moved to Barry, added: “So many people were telling me about GlastonBARRY. We bought tickets and went along. We had the time of our lives. We love live music and go to as many gigs as possible all around the UK.I can quite honestly say the production, sound and bands were first class. All the staff and everyone we met were so friendly and it was the best event we have been to for a very long time. Bring on next year.”

A film crew has been following Ross and Matt for the past six months with the intention of producing a documentary.

Filmmaker Mark Woods is set to produce the documentary, entitled Waking Up Barry.

The organisers thanked Barry Town Council and Ewe Move for sponsoring GlastonBARRY.

Ross added: “A massive thank you to everyone who bought tickets and supported what we are doing. We are already planning next year’s festival and we can promise that it's going to be even bigger and better.”
