VALE students have celebrated college AS and A level success.

Lorik Bothwell, 18, of Dinas Powys and Jennifer Marks, 17, of Barry, were among the 96 percent of students gaining qualifications at Cardiff and Calve College (CAVC).

Many will go on to university and higher level learning.

The 96 percent success for students gaining A* to E grades included figures for students taking the Welsh Baccalaureate as an additional subject and not an add-on to their A levels.

The college saw 100 percent pass rates in French, Spanish, further mathematics, English language and literature, art & design, history and government & politics.

Lorik Bothwell achieved As in AS level maths, physics and German and wants to finish his A levels then go on to study physics, either in Durham, Bristol or a London university.

He said: “I’m happy – I wasn’t sure about the German but I’m glad. I’ll be coming back to college to do my A2s and I want to study physics at university, either at Durham or Bristol on maybe in London. I really enjoy college – I’ve had a really good time.”

School partnership student, Jennifer Marks, achieved As in A2 maths and chemistry, while taking music at Whitchurch High School.

She said: “I’m very happy with my results. I was not entirely sure what to expect because it’s been a lot of hard work. I want to go into music – I’m already teaching the piano. College has been a valuable experience and I have enjoyed it thoroughly, meeting lots of different people.”

CAVC deputy principal for curriculum, Kay Martin said: “We are delighted to once again see excellent pass rates and it is fantastic news that our focus on challenging and supporting AS and A level learners to gain the highest grades possible is paying off. The progression rates to university and higher level learning are really pleasing and there are some fantastic individual stories of learners going to top universities and starting their training for the careers of their dreams.”
