VISITORS to Barry Island on Sunday (August 24) can view what’s occurin’ when up to 100 cyclists arrive following a Gavin and Stacey-fuelled journey.

Cyclists taking part in the three-day 250-mile Gavin 2 Stacey charity cycle ride will have their chips, courtesy of fellow cyclist and resort chip shop owner Craig O’Shea.

Craig and his team-mates Matthew Cockrell, 39, and Jamie Ross, 25, are hoping to raise £1,000 for Ty Hapus, on Holton Road, Barry.

Ty Hapus provides a unique and specialist day time service for people with early onset Alzheimers disease and other dementias - particularly focusing on those diagnosed under 65 and their families.

The riders will start off in Billericay, Essex – Gavin’s hometown – and complete their journey at Barry Island – Stacey’s home turf.

Craig, 42, said: “The preparations have been difficult with the great weather we have been having. I've been so busy over the island and finding time has been the hardest part. We have managed to get out on the road for a 50 mile ride once a week as well has hitting the gym twice a week. We have had a few accidents along the way, but picked ourselves up and jumped straight back on the bikes.

“As we are getting closer the realisation has set in on how difficult a challenge it’s going to be but also the excitement of what a great challenge it is.”

“I would like to thank Parkwood Leisure and Sinclair Volkswagen, Cardiff, for their sponsorship and the Vale of Glamorgan Council for their help and support.”

Around 60 riders are due at Barry Island at 3pm on Sunday.
