A BARRY town councillor has ensured it’s a stitch in time in commemoration of one of Barry’s most-valued places.
Cllr Shirley Hodges, who represents Baruc ward, has celebrated 125 years of Merthyr Dyfan cemetery, by creating a stitched panel for Barry Town Council.
She said: “I was thrilled at the opportunity to celebrate two things I love, beautiful Merthyr Dyfan Cemetery and needlepoint sewing. It was a pleasure to gift the panel to the Town Council and I would like to thank all of my friends whose advice I took on what to include in the panel. It took me three months to complete the sewing in wool on canvas in cross stitch and double cross stitch. It shows the chapel and the water fountain together with headstones connecting earth and nature as the tree climbs upwards and the three birds fly higher towards heaven. The panel is in subdued tones, the only vivid colour is the poppy, a symbol to remind us of the many war graves at the cemetery.”
The Town Council will hold an open day at Merthyr Dyfan Cemetery on Saturday, September 13 to commemorate 125 years of service to the Barry community.
