BARRY Communities First and partners took on a young Barry Llamau this past week to celebrate the partnership between the two organisations at the Colcot Sports Centre, Barry.
As part of this partnership, Barry Communities First have provided Llamau with a full football kit to take part in the National Street Games league.
The Barry Communities First team consisted of a mix of Vale of Glamorgan Council employees, Careers Wales, South Wales Police, Newydd Housing Association and the Community Champion for Barry Morrison’s.
Llamau donning their new purple kit started off brightly by taking an early lead through a deceptive header from David Budd. Communities First then struck an equaliser with StreetGames Coach and Morrison Community Champion Mark Nickerson scoring from a rebound after his initial 12 yard shot had hit the post.
Communities First continued to press and eventually took the lead through a well-placed finish by Newydd Housing Association worker Jon Hussey from a cross.
In the second half Amos Geary from the Vale FACT team converted a penalty to make it 3-1 before a well-placed shot by Kasim Gehlan made it 3-2 to give Llamau hope of a late comeback. In the closing stages of the game Mark Nickerson scored again after intercepting a pass from Aidy ‘Higuita’ Gratton resulting in a pin point finish.
It was a hard fought match with both teams putting in 100 per cent effort but Communities First and partners triumphed 4-2. After the game a presentation was held to give the Llamau team a goodie bag of sports and Communities First equipment.
Llamau chief executive, Frances Beecher, said: “Llamau has an excellent relationship with Communities First and the people and communities of Barry, and this is another example of the great work that we do together.”

Communities First would also like to thank Morrison’s and the Community Health and Wellbeing Coach, Hazel James for providing and preparing the half-time refreshments for both teams.
