Budding chippie has been give a taste of the job on a local site.
Charlie Waller from Barry has set her sights on becoming a carpenter and recently spent a week on the former Barry Magistrates Courts site on placement with Jehu Project Services Limited who are building the housing and retail units on behalf of Newydd Housing and Vale of Glamorgan Council.
The £6m project which will provide 52 affordable homes and retail units in the town centre has hosted a number of Taster days for local people interested in trying their skills in construction. Charlie attended one of these Taster Days in April and this led to the offer of work experience on the project. She has been able to work alongside local carpentry firm Jones and Ryle, gaining useful experience to set her up for her next step in September which is a carpentry course at Cardiff and Vale College.
Bernie Mark, Jehu Construction Opportunities Coordinator said “ We are delighted to be able to support local people interested in pursuing a career in the construction industry and particularly keen to encourage local women and girls like Charlie to consider the industry as a real training and employment choice, and not just as an area restricted to men.”
