A PETITION from Court ward residents calling for the construction of a Hannah Street relief road in Barry has been presented to the Vale of Glamorgan Council.

The council is considering disposing of its Court Road depot site for housing, and the petition organised by Cllr Richard Bertin demands that, before any possible new homes, there should be a new road.

The disposal of the site is being considered to meet the demands for 10,000 new homes in the Vale by 2026. This figure is disputed by many, including Cllr Bertin.

In consideration of its latest draft LDP, the Vale council has, overall, reduced the number of homes originally being considered for Barry, but it is now considering building on two sites in the Court Ward - the depot and at Ysgol Maes Dyfan which is due to close in September.

It is also rumoured that a discount supermarket may be interested in building on the council depot site but this has yet been confirmed.

Independent councillor Richard Bertin is supporting the residents by saying a road must be in place in the first instance to relieve traffic congestion on Hannah Street and the surrounding areas.

He said: “It is important that this road is built first to ease congestion in the area.

“Perhaps a new parking facility could also be considered for the teaching staff of Jenner Park School so they can have a suitable facility to park all their vehicles safely.”

He said that there needed to be full and proper consultation with local residents before any homes are built.
