FOR youngsters at a Barry primary school it was more a case of Lord Sugar than refined sugar when they served up some fruity treats.

Year 6 Cadoxton primary pupils honed their mathematical and literacy skills when they developed and enterprise project that gave fellow pupils a fructose based boost on Fruity Friday.

The unique project, devised by the pupils saw them donate profits from sales to Ty Hafan and Marie Curie while enabling their friends to taste fruits – plums, strawberries, grapes, raspberries, and cherries – they may not normally try.

Produce supplied by Michael Brown, of Bessemer Road Wholesale Fruit Market, and dished out by volunteer mums Kristy Harding, Jessica Finch, Jo Burns, Donna Georgiou, Roxine Havard, Janet Clarke and Rowena Hughes, who filled the bowls ready for the young paying customers.

Organiser, Sarah McKee said: “They had to arrange an original project. We raised £200 at Easter time – we had three Easter eggs and a raffle and they all took part in that. Lunch boxes had chocolate and crisps and children say they don’t like fruit, but they say that because they just don’t eat it.”

Fruity Friday also saw pupils take part in a colouring competition which also designed a healthy lunch box and win a voucher to use in the school’s popular Food Co-op.

Mum, Janet Clarke said: “It gives them the opportunity to try something different.”
