A BARRY couple who have cared for more than 100 children, have been awarded MBEs in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list.

65-year-old Stuart and 66-year-old Sandra Peacock have been recognised for their roles as foster carers and for their services to children and families in the Vale.

The pair have been providing long and short term care for children and young people, who cannot live with their families, since 1969.

They have cared for children and young people from the ages of two to 16 who often exhibit feelings of anxiety, loss, inner turmoil, attachment disorder and challenging behaviour, which requires a significant amount of carer skill.

Their support continues when the children return to their parents and includes taking children on family holidays, helping them move house, supporting them and through life’s challenges.

Sandra and Stuart also provide a significant support network as carers, including their involvement in support groups for children in foster care.

They support young people by advocating on their behalf and teaching them life skills.

They have used their experience and skills to mentor and support other foster carers.

Secretary of State for Wales, David Jones congratulated the award recipients.

The MP said: “Every year, hundreds of people who serve their communities and country – often without expectation of reward – are honoured in this way. They are selected for their dedication, commitment and tireless work in helping to improve the lives of others.

“It is always so uplifting to hear of the good work being done by those honoured, and to see the positive difference they make to our nation. I am proud to add my thanks and congratulations to them all."
