FOOTIE fans will be able to cheer their World Cup favourites for longer after the UK Government decided Wales’ pubs could extend hours for free.

Vale MP has called on Alun Cairns MP to consider extending their opening hours during the World Cup following the newly agreed free Temporary Event Notice (TEN).

Mr Cairns campaigned successfully for the change since a blanket extension was given to England only.

Home Secretary, Theresa May responded to his calls by introducing a simplified TEN, which means pubs and clubs won’t have to pay the fee to extend their hours.

His campaign followed the agreement for licensing arrangements for premises in England to be relaxed for the duration of the World Cup. Individual pubs in Wales would still have needed to apply for a TEN.

Alun said: “I am delighted with this news and pubs and clubs in the Vale of Glamorgan need to respond urgently. The Home Secretary has confirmed that the statutory instrument will create a simple form of TENs for premises in Wales which will be valid for England matches in the World Cup and there will be no fee involved. The Government will reimburse licensing authorities.

“This is great news for people in Wales who want to be able to watch the games the same way as in England. Although I will be supporting England, it may be that some Welsh people will support anyone playing England!

“The economic issues are very important. Too many pubs have closed and many remain under threat. This is a welcome boost to the industry. There are clearly economic benefits to these amendments.”
