ORGANISERS of an annual charity football tournament celebrating the life of a Barry teenager have launched their call for teams to sign up.

The family of David Dinxsy Coombs, who died in September 2003, will once again host the Buttrills Field, Barry, event in his memory to coincide with his birthday.

David was a passionate Manchester United fan and played himself in the local Barry league and for LLandridnod Wells.

The Dinxy's Day Football Tournament will take place on Saturday, May 31 with registration at 10am and kick off at 11am.

David’s mum, Kim Coombs, of Barry, said: “We only had 10 teams entered last year, slightly less than usual, due to the league overrunning which meant that players were involved in playing league games and were unable to attend the tournament. Also some of Dinxsy's team mates were unable to attend the tournament as it clashed with the wedding of another of his friends. We sincerely hope that we have a better turn out this year as it may, very possibly, be the last one as we are all getting too old to keep it going. We very much appreciate all the help we get from family and friends, to run this tournament, our thanks also to the council for allowing us to use the pitches.”

She added: “We desperately need some help with the refereeing and we also need two more sets of nets.

“If anyone can help with either of these requests we would be grateful if they could contact us to let us know.

“David's grandparents will be manning the barbeque and drinks stall and we will be selling raffle tickets, all proceeds will go to charity. Last year we raised over £400 which was donated to various charities, this year we would like to raise a lot more to be split between Cancer charities, British Heart foundation and animal charities.”

Anyone wishing to register a team, seven-aside, men, women or mixed, more than 16 years of age, can ring on 01446 404679 or they can register 10am on the day.

Entry for each player is £1.
