VALE MP Alun Cairns has welcomed the launch of the new Sustrans Campaign for Safer Streets.

Sustrans is the charity that’s enabling people to travel by foot, bike or public transport for more of the journeys that people make every day.

A recent study by Sustrans showed that in 2012, 33 children, equivalent to over one primary school class were killed, and over seven whole primary schools seriously injured in Great Britain, while walking or cycling on our roads.

Mr Cairns explained: “Every child has the right to walk, cycle or scoot to school and there is an urgent need to address road safety to make this vision a reality. Sustrans are calling for dedicated funding to be made available for active travel; lower traffic speeds and transformed local walking and cycling routes.

“I hope to meet with Sustrans representatives in the very near future to find out how I can support their initiatives by raising awareness at Westminster and putting pressure on the devolved administration in Wales to take any appropriate action.”
