A YOUNG musician and pupil from Ysgol Bro Morgannwg, Barry, has been congratulated by Cardiff Bay Rotary for her outstanding performance at this year’s national final of the RIBI Young Musician Competition.
Vocalist Manon Ogwen Parry, aged 14, came an impressive 2nd and faced some tough competition only losing out to 18-year-old Isabelle Atkinson who has recently gained a scholarship to study at the Royal College of Music, London.
The RIBI (Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland) Young Musician competition provides a stage for musical talent with many musicians taking part in regional competitions before the final.
Manon, after winning the regional competitions, travelled to the final in Truro, Cornwell, where she faced competitors from across the country.
A member of the Cardiff Bay Rotary Club said: "The standard was extremely high as would be expected for such a prestigious event.
"Manon performed Wohin (Schubert), A blackbird singing (Head) and Vanilla Ice Cream (Bock) quite brilliantly and was the only competitor to get a rousing cheer from the audience at the end.
"She is an immense talent and, whilst it is difficult to see how, she can only get better."
Manon studies with her mother, Soprano Angela Morris Parry, who also teaches many other children in the local area.
Angela said: “Manon did extremely well to come second and she received high praise from the judges. I am very proud of her and so are all her family.
"I have been teaching for many years so Manon has grown up with music in the home from a very young age.
"She has always enjoyed singing and I have worked with her to enhance her talent.
"She is now looking forward to working with Welsh National Opera singer Rebecca Evans and this will give her more experience."
Manon, from Penarth, has entered and won many competitions in recent years. She is a member of the Cor Heol Y March and the National Training Choir of Wales. She enjoys singing on stage and will be entering more competitions in the future so watch this space!
