ELEVEN pink mopeds will be passing through Barry, as their riders make an eight day trip around Wales raising funds for Cancer Research.

The riders - the oldest of who is 76-years-old - will take to their old 49cc Honda Vision Mopeds painted in pink for their 1,000 mile trek on Saturday, May 17 passing through Barry two days later on Sunday, May 18.

The group will then travel around the West Wales coastline, taking in Swansea, Pembroke, Carmarthen, Aberaeron, Aberystwyth, Pwllheli, Caernarfon, Bangor, Anglesey, Conway, and Llangollen before returning to Newtown a week later.

The decision to fundraise for Cancer Research Wales was made due to every member experiencing the devastation that cancer can cause.

Rider Hywel Thomas said: “All the riders have been impacted by cancer, either personally or knowing friends or family who are currently suffering or who have, sadly, died from the disease.

“The inspiration for the ride came when (fellow rider) Mike Jones wanted to do something in memory of his friend, Clive Smout, who passed away from cancer, and it was then that the Cancer Research Wales Moped Challenge was born.

“The idea of riding pink mopeds came from seeing French motorcyclists at Pegasus Bridge in Ouistreham riding Peugeot Mobylettes and drawing the attention of crowds.

"We’re hoping people in Barry will see us and support the cause.”

The committed team will be paying all their own costs including that of the mopeds and all money raised will go directly to Cancer Research Wales.

Laura Priddle, Fundraising Manager at Cancer Research Wales, said: “Hywel, Mike, and the team have put a lot of effort into organising this ride and doing their mopeds up and we really appreciate it. They’ll definitely stand out and I have no doubt the passers-by in Barry will be cheering them on all the way.

“All the money raised by the team will go towards funding crucial research projects carried out the charity including a current study aiming to identify some of the key causes of delays in cancer diagnosis and treatment which in turn affects the survival rates for cancer patients in Wales.

“We wish the guys the best of luck.”
