RESTORATION work on Barry’s old fire station, pictured above, has been welcomed by town centre councillor Ian Johnson.

After many years out of service, work has begun on the exterior of the fire station on Court Road, which was granted planning permission to be turned into eight flats.

Councillor Johnson, a Plaid Cymru councillor in the centre of Barry, said that he welcomed that the work was finally taking place.

Cllr Johnson said: “I am very pleased that the old fire station is finally being restored after being an eyesore and a danger to the public for many years.

“In the past, we have seen slates falling off the roof and the building has been allowed to fall into disrepair, forcing the council to go to court to take action.

“It is good news that the new owners are now pushing ahead in developing the fire station into modern flats while maintaining the exterior, including the look-out.

“As the flats will have their own parking at the rear, through Watson Street, they won’t be adding to town centre parking.

“The old fire station is one of Barry’s historic buildings and I look forward to seeing it finally restored.”
