SINCE 1996 Soroptimist International Barry and District has presented an annual award for community service to a student in Bryn Hafren Comprehensive School.

This year’s worthy recipient as Richenda Tomelda who is studying Health and Social Studies, Science and Ethics. Her wish is to become a nurse and her caring nature is evident in her involvement in the community.

Richenda is part of the Sixth Form Leadership Team and has the role of Year 12 Prefect. As a prefect she undertakes roles within the school community and is a member of the duty team, supervising lunchtime activities in the main hall.

According to her head of year “She is a good role model for the younger pupils as she conducts herself in a mature manner. She has always been a model pupil, willing to participate in all aspects of school life.”

Richenda decided to offer help to the local Food Bank as part of her 30 hours voluntary work for Welsh Baccalaureate. However, she enjoyed what she was doing and has continued with this on a regular basis ever since. Richenda goes to the Food Bank every Thursday after school. Her duties include ensuring the correct products are placed in boxes and bags to give to those who visit the food bank. She also helps deliver the items within the community.

Richenda balances her voluntary work with her Sixth Form studies. She is well-mannered and one who always has a smile on her face - a lovely, mature pupil.
