A CLYDESIDER who adopted Barry as her home, celebrated her 100th birthday at her Island residence on April, 12.

Janet Malpas of Island View Residential Home, Barry Island marked the occasion with her family and other residents as she sang along to well known songs performed by the in-home entertainer.

Janet was originally born in Port Glasgow and lived overlooking the Clyde River.

She worked as a bus conductor during the war and met her husband Norman who was in the Royal Engineers.

Janet moved to Barry where her husband had relatives.

Janet and her husband opened a non-alcoholic club known as the Malpa Rooms, in Broad Street, Barry, which held dances were held there, and boasted a snooker club, card room and changing rooms for local sports.

She supported her husband when he was a referee coach providing refreshment and was known to run on the pitch with “the magic sponge” to sooth injuries.

Janet’s father also moved to Barry and became captain of the Salvation Army.

Janet was active and still dancing several times a week until she had a fall aged 92.

She has a son, Barry, and three grandchildren, Scott, Amy and Aaron.
