A TEAM of six Barry Comprehensive students celebrated success after winning the Research and Development Award at the 2014 F1 in Schools UK National Finals.
At the Big Bang Science and Engineering Fair in Birmingham the boys, Mitchell Thorngate, 15, Oliver Bartlett, 14, Morgan Osbourne, 15, William Eddy, 15, Rhys Philips, 17 and Gareth Hurman, 16, competed against the best F1 in Schools teams in the UK.
The judges were impressed with the team’s research and their wheel bearings development.
The 2014 F1 in Schools UK National Finals pitted 30 winning F1 in Schools regional finals teams against each other, all vying for a trip to Abu Dhabi.
The competition challenges teams of between three and six students to form a Formula One team, designing, manufacturing, testing and racing a miniature F1 car.
Mitchell Thorngate said after the awards: "It feels brilliant to have won the award. We've worked so hard to compete here and it feels so rewarding to have actually won an award.
"We're ecstatic, really proud of ourselves.
"We've enjoyed competing at the National Finals and hopefully one day we can progress to the finals."
