WOMEN in Barry showed Bob the Builder how it’s done and took part in the first Girls Construction Taster Day at the former Barry magistrates Courts site on Thompson Street.
Seven women, encouraged by the prospect of trying out new skills and the opportunity to see career options up close, took part in the day organised by main contractor Jehu Project Services Limited and Newydd housing association.
Jehu Project manager Vince Alm and Newydd Surveyor Rhiannydd Jenkins, welcomed them to the site and Vale AM, Jane Hutt attended the introduction and chatted to the girls before accompanying them out to their first workshop .
The day consisted of ‘hands- on’ sessions in brickwork , carpentry and site levelling and an introduction to groundworks, plus a tour of the site.
Construction opportunities coordinator at Jehu, Bernie Mark said: “This taster day event was designed to show those women who may be interested in the construction industry that it is possible to make a career in what is often seen as a male dominated environment. The message of the day was Why not try it? and we were delighted that to see so many enthusiastic girls attending.”
