BEACH huts under construction at Barry Island will be available for public hire once complete, the Vale Council has said.

Twelve large huts are being built on the eastern promenade at Whitmore Bay, as part of £3 million worth of Welsh Government Barry Regeneration Area funding.

One hut, not for hire, will have communal running water and all of the huts will have electrical sockets to provide users with access to power.

Vale Council major projects manager, John Dent said work on the Barry Island beach huts was progressing well.

He said: “We expect demand for the huts to be high and want to make sure that as many visitors to Barry Island as possible are able to enjoy them.

"For this reason we currently plan to make the larger huts available for hire only on a short term basis. The cabinet will receive a report in the near future on this matter.

“There will also be 12 smaller huts located at the end of the promenade. These smaller huts will be available for hire on an hourly basis for use as changing facilities.

“We have taken the decision to manage the huts ourselves and will be finalising the process by which visitors can hire a hut in the near future.

“The construction of the huts is due to be completed in June and we fully expect them to be open to the public in time for the school holidays.”
