A VALE leisure operator has given a team of charity fundraisers a push start in their efforts to support a Barry-based charity.

Parkwood Leisure, which operates the Vale Council’s leisure centres, has donated £2,000 to a local team taking part in the Gavin to Stacey cycle ride this summer as they endeavour to raise funds for early-onset Alzheimer's and dementia charity Ty Hapus on Holton Road.

Craig O’Shea’s team, Team Barry Island, will pedal 250 miles from Billericay, Essex, to Barry Island, from Friday, August 22, to Sunday, August 24.

Craig said: “We have been overwhelmed by the support shown and are extremely grateful to Parkwood Leisure for their very generous donation. The charity that we are raising money for is Ty Hapus. It is unique respite care facility based at 163 Holton Road, Barry, for people who have been diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's."

Speaking on behalf of Parkwood Leisure, general manager Vale of Glamorgan contract James Webber said: “We are delighted to support this great event. Craig and his teammates have started their training at Barry Leisure Centre so I don’t think they are going to have any problems meeting the distance.”

Vale Council cabinet member for leisure, parks, culture and sports development Cllr Gwyn John said: “We are looking forward to welcoming all the teams back to Barry Island and will be asking people to turn out and show their support for what will be a wonderful achievement.”
