A GRANDMOTHER is urging people to take care after she suffered facial injuries following a fall on storm-produced debris at Barry Cemetery last week.

Sixty-three-year-old Pauline Tumilty needed Barry Hospital and University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, attention after she tumbled on twigs while visiting her husband, on his birthday, at the family grave.

Pauline had been putting flowers on his grave near Buttrills Field just before 10.30am on Wednesday, March 19.

Pauline, of the Waterfront, Barry, said: “I was walking back the way I came and I just went because of the twigs on the floor. I just put my foot on them and my body hit the ground.

“I was shocked and scared and I couldn’t get myself up.”

She phoned a friend who was able to help her and take her to hospital as required where they informed her she had a bad contusion, would probably get two black eyes and should rest up for the day.

Pauline said: “I’m just concerned about the state of the floor up here and old people. Somebody elderly could easily fall and break a limb. There was no-one to help me up.

“There was storm damage, but there are a lot of branches left from three weeks ago. It annoyed me that it hadn’t been cleared away. It’s a public place.”

Barry Town Council town clerk Cliff Lewis said he was unable to comment on the individual incident in question, but added that the cemetery was a large open space which was prone to high winds due to its location.
