AN EYECATCHING collection of public artworks inspired by Barry school children's designs has been unveiled at Taylor Wimpey’s Golwg Y Coed development.

Decorative gates and railings now surround the children’s playground with slate and bronze monoliths lining a public footpath leading from the development to the ancient Pencoedtre Wood.

The installations were recently unveiled by Vale mayor Cllr Margaret Wilkinson.

Pupils were asked to devise ideas based on the heritage of the woodland, where Iron Age remains have been discovered.

Artist David Mackie brought the ideas to life.

More than 70 primary and secondary school pupils helped him create the striking showpiece works inspired by the ancient woodland which borders the development.

Workshops were held at Ysgol Gyfun Bro Morgannwg, Cadoxton and Colcot Primaries, St Richard Gwyn RC High School and Barry Comprehensive.
